What is Wi-Fi 6 and the benefits

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity, is a technology that used to connect computers, smartphones, or other devices to the internet or communicate with one another using radio frequencies within a particular area.

Wi-Fi was introduced by Wi-Fi Alliance organisation by using the name of network protocol standard IEEE 802.11. Due to naming was complicated and novice user did not understand it well, Wi Fi Alliance decided using numbers to identify the Wi-Fi generations as shown below.

Today Wi-Fi is about to get faster and better and here is Wi-Fi 6, which is the latest generation standard Wi-Fi technology and the successor of Wi-Fi 5. Wi-Fi 6 is not only providing faster speed for user devices, it is also assisted to improve the network performance when a lot of devices are connected.

Benefits of Wi-Fi 6

Faster
Wi-Fi 6 offers maximum throughput of 9.6 Gbps across multiple channels while Wi-Fi 5 offers a maximum of 3.5 Gbps. However, in the real world, users will not experience the maximum speed of 9.6 Gbps and this is because it is already shared across multiple devices, so devices with Wi-Fi 6 can take advantage and enjoy much higher speeds even if they do not reach their maximum potential. Wi Fi 6 uses Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) technology that allows one transmission to deliver data to multiple devices at once. This has effectively solved data congestion and offer up to 75% less latency.

Improve security
Wi-Fi 6 provide a new security protocol called WPA3. This technology can prevent brute force attacks and brute force cracking hence make the data more secure. Even if hackers able to obtain the data, the data will be less useful.

More power saving
Wi-Fi 6 contains a new feature called Target Wake Time, which lets routers to define a specific time to check-in with devices. This will allow devices connect to the wireless router when receiving a transmission command and will be in sleep mode at other times. This feature less drains on batteries and improved receiver devices battery life.

Support more devices
Wi-Fi 6 is able to connect up to 30 devices compare to Wi-Fi 5 which is up to 8 devices at a time. Meaning is any extra devices connect to the Wi-Fi will need to wait for it turn to receive the data, this will cause slowness / latency on that device It is recommended for home users to use Wi-Fi 6 as there will be more and more IoT (Internet of Things) devices in the market which uses Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi Air Cond, Wi-Fi light, Google Home Mini, just to name a few). In order to fully utilize Wi-Fi 6 potential, ISP also need to play part of it. User need to have a high internet connection speed (500Mbps or greater) to enjoy and experience Wi-Fi 6.

All brand of Wi-Fi 6 systems is slightly different, so it's important to examine and evaluate the technology that each brand uses. Not sure what brand to choose? Contact us TODAY for more information by reaching us at 6295 5962 or drop us at info@achievement.com.sg.
