What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique string of numbers that is assigned to a device as a form of identification across the Internet
so that other devices can transmit information to it. IP stands for "Internet Protocol", and is specific to the Internet,
not the web or computer networks in general. When you sign up Internet plan with an Internet Service Provider at your
country, you will either end up with a static IP address or a dynamic IP address. What's the difference between the two?
Static IP
A static IP is an IP address that is assigned to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and does not change even upon
restarting your computer, provided your contract with them is in good standing & used by all major websites, email
services, FTP services and so on.
Dynamic IP
Dynamic IP addresses may change each time you connect to the Internet and every time you send a message over the Internet.

Cost
Static IP addresses generally cost more than dynamic IPs. Internet Service Providers (ISP) generally assign dynamic IP addresses from a pool of reusable IP addresses that they have on hand at timed intervals. The providers end up purchasing these IP addresses and thus the cost is also reflected in the total bill.
Stability
Some resources, such as domain names and corresponding email addresses, or file downloads, can sometimes be linked to an IP address. If IP addresses were to reset every time the computer or router was restarted, it could cause a lapse in email or server access.
Security & Privacy
As static IP addresses never change, they can become security risk as it is easier to track the computer it is linked to. However, this security risk can be easily circumvented with good firewall and updated internet security suite. Meanwhile, Dynamic IP addresses changes with each session on the network and is more difficult for hackers to compromise data security. However, you may risk of getting a recycled IP with bad reputation.
When would I need dynamic IP addresses?
You may require dynamic IP addresses if you use our broadband services for any of the following:
- Browsing the Internet.
- Sending and receiving emails or a typically web based mail service such as Gmail, Hotmail etc.
- Downloading or uploading files (using FTP or HTTP).
- Instant messaging services or chat services.
- Running services such as web or FTP servers that ONLY require access from your local area network (single site) or perhaps within a multi-site corporate network.
When would I need a static IP address?
You may require one or more static IP addresses if you're using our broadband service for any of the following:
- Static publishing services on Server such as Web Server, external DNS, FTP etc., that require external access from the Internet.
- Site-to-site VPN Tunnel between office and sites, private network for File Servers and Applications
